Moab roadtrip, Dad/Bodie/Jasper and lots of friends

I’m writing this in 2023, trying to add these old trips into the blog, and my memory is hazy at best.

Karen stayed home to experience some peace and quiet while I drove the boys to Moab and met up with a couple other families. It went extremely well, considering the drive was 9 hours each way. Handling the roadtrip snacks and toys for a 2- and 4-year old is much harder from the driver’s seat.

In the Moab area we managed to find a campsite that wasn’t terribly far from town, and then enjoyed lots of rainy days. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of other people I convinced to join us, and then guilty that it rained most of the trip. The arroyo right next to our campsite flooded one night, which provided some excitement. I remember engaging in copious parental oversight of small boys climbing on rocks and steep slopes (the pictures capture a bit of this). I know that one of the days we drove to Arches and hiked out to (towards?) Delicate Arch, which is the first time I did that (and the last time I need to). Arches attracts huge quantities of people, which isn’t really my outdoors thing. I also recall that we did a long drive into Canyonlands and walked around for a few minutes next to the parking lot.

I think I spent most of the time just dealing with the logistics of feeding and camping and parenting the boys by myself. But the boys were so happy, and they got along so well together, and were so awesome on the car ride, it was all worth it.

We’re a homeschooling family in Los Alamos, New Mexico, hoping to give our boys a love for the great outdoors and provide them with skills they’ll enjoy for life. When it comes to camping, we are experts at getting off the beaten path, away from crowded campgrounds.  And adventuring to us can be as simple as checking out a local park or as ambitious as hiking a Colorado 14’er.
