When our first son was only 7 weeks old (yes, you read that right), we decided to celebrate our wedding anniversary by camping in the national forest outside of Durango, CO. Since it was barely October – and our brains had been frazzled from lack of sleep – we didn’t check the weather. Settled into our beautiful, surprisingly snowy campsite, we bundled up to enjoy the fresh air only to be shocked by the reality that it would never get above freezing the entire weekend and would dip down into single digits at night. Trying to breastfeed and keep a newborn warm when it’s 10 degrees outside is NO FUN. Our poor son cried all night long and eventually we gave up the dream and headed home.
Having a baby means a lot of things have to change, including how you adventure. Now, almost 7 years into parenting and adventuring with our kiddos, we are seeing the fruits of our labor – our boys LOVE camping! We are now trying to teach them the joys of climbing, hiking, backpacking, canyoneering, and road-tripping.
No longer just a blip on the map as we zoom down I-40 on our way to somewhere else, New Mexico has become our home. Living in Los Alamos, we are well-positioned to explore all that the Southwest has to offer. Getting outside and showing our boys the beauty of the great outdoors is a top priority and we are committed to sharing our adventures with them. We are also committed to sharing our adventures with YOU in the hopes that we can recruit some new friends and families to join us outside, and also so we can share what we have learned (and are still learning) about traveling and exploring as a family.
