Late Spring Camping in the Jemez

On Memorial-day weekend we camped with another family in the Jemez mountains just north of the Valle Caldera border. Although the straight-line distance is not very far from our house, the easiest access requires driving West to the valley, North and West of Abiqui, then back south into the mountains from the North.

We went to a spot that I had scouted previously during a SAR mission. It is quite remote. Memorial Day weekend is the single most popular camping weekend of the year, but we only briefly saw one other truck the whole time. The spot is a huge wide open meadow with plenty of room for games and spreading out.

Weather was great and we went for a short bike ride along the northern border fence of the Valle on one of the days.
